The Process

As a college preparatory 号百彩票官网, the college process begins as soon as students set foot on campus. Our faculty and Academic Dean have college preparation in mind as they plan their courses and as they advise students in their course sign-ups. While students are welcome to work with our College号百彩票官网 Counselor at any time, students formally begin in their Junior year. Below is a general outline of this formal process. More detail is available upon request and is provided to both parents and students as they embark on this exciting next step!
The college process for me was a great chance to tie my four years together. I took the opportunity to reflect about my time at WMS, and what I wanted for the next four years. I knew my self, my interests, and my goals infinitely better than if I would have stayed at 号百彩票 for 号百彩票官网.  The WMS College号百彩票官网 Counseling department was super helpful.  I had a thousand resources at my disposal. — Student

Junior Year

Starting in the winter, juniors meet with the college counselor in small groups to progress through a curriculum that helps students learn their strengths, academic interests, personality style and other characteristics that will help them identify colleges that may be the best fit.

To guide our studies, we use the book "College号百彩票官网 Match: A Blueprint for Choosing the Best School for You" by Steven Antonoff. The course also covers the following concepts:

  • Standardized-test preparation
  • Building the college list
  • Refining the college list
  • Majors and areas of academic study
  • Differences between colleges and universities
  • Career and personal goals
  • Summer extracurricular and class opportunities
  • Campus visits
  • Interviewing
  • Financial aid
  • Discussions of current events in higher education
  • Admission policies (early decision, early action)
  • Letters of recommendation

Senior Year

Here is an overview of the college counseling process, arranged by month:

September:
Meetings are focused on revising students college lists as final grade point averages from junior year and test scores are available. A balanced list of colleges is determined, consisting of six to eight 号百彩票官网s that are likely, probable or reaches for admission. Affordability is also considered in creating the balanced list. Seniors meet in small groups as part of a college counseling class to facilitate steps required to complete applications. Assistance with standardized testing registration occurs.

October: Individual meetings are often spent advising and assisting students with college essay writing. Seniors also have the opportunity to retake the SAT, ACT and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Students are encouraged to begin submitting applications to larger state universities and colleges with rolling decisions. College号百彩票官网 fairs occur throughout October and students are encouraged to visit colleges for interviews and research, especially during Fall Break. Seniors are encouraged to apply for national scholarships, many of which have deadlines in the fall.

November: Early decision and early action deadlines occur this month. Students work closely with the College号百彩票官网 Counselor on college essays and the increasingly important supplemental essays. There are opportunities this month for standardized testing as well. Students may also interview at colleges during Thanksgiving week. Mid-semester grades are available at this time.

December: Most students should have applications completed by the end of the month (regular decision admission deadlines are commonly 12/31 or 1/1). Some students may submit later than December to take advantage of first semester grades.
